Unique Model - Preciosity of Straw Marquetry and « Bleu de Sèvres » Lacquer

Year of production: 2012. The unique model from the piano Dream decorator’s collection.

For that Collection, Alberto Pinto referred to sophisticated and refined arts of the 40s. Many details in the finishes enhance an extreme elegance : colour contrasts, material effects, selection of refined and precious materials, highlighting the rare craftsmanship of the Pleyel expertise.

“It is as a decorator, even as a stylist, that I approached the challenge, with a variety of suggestions for how to embellish the piano.

For the unique model, for which I called on one of the most refined decorative arts techniques. On this model, the cocoon of narrow stripes which visually enclose the piano is suggested by a marquetry of straw. With the application of this natural material, itself quite humble, the objects are endowed with a unique vibration. Its warm golden pallor evolves into metallic effects of great beauty, enhanced by the bronze ball at the legs. Meanwhile, this inside is beautiful with a radiant blue de Sèvres lacquer, whose deep colour evokes porcelain, producing a striking contrast with the straw.
A harmony of arts and materials for the benefit of the music object.”

« Peugeot Design Lab for Pleyel » by Peugeot Design Lab

Wood and Carbon Fibre, Black and White Glossy Lacquer

Year of first production : 2012. Presented at the Milan Salon del Mobile Fair.

The Peugeot Design Lab has completely revisited the instrument by endeavouring to change all of the traditional conventions, as regards volume, ergonomics and construction. The studio has created a design language that rewrites the visual conventions of what a piano should look like, suggesting dynamism, lightness and an effect of levitation. The designers then gave it a sculpture, quality and sophistication of surface taken from the world of the automobile while respecting the Pleyel 200 years of skills and know-how.

This grand’s major innovations are the lowering of the mechanics in order to align the pianos cover and keyboard for an unequalled acoustic and visual quality, a new opening system by coming up with a self-supporting lid mechanism that can be raised with one hand - an idea borrowed directly from a cars tailgate -, a single cantilever leg with all the elegance of a suspension bridge creating a surprising levitation effect by offering the sight of a mechanism, supposedly heavy, floating above the stage. It confers exceptional visual lightness to what is traditionally one of the heaviest instruments in the musical world. Although the body of the piano and the soundboard are made of wood, which reacts best to sound, the lid and the leg have been made of carbon fibre for its properties of lightness and also of sound projection.

The frame of this 2.04 m grand piano is resolutely black. The lacquered blackness of the ebony, like that of the keys, is enhanced by the anthracite grey of the casting, forming a contrast with the legs, music stand, lyre and piano prop, all in solid natural wood.
